The Four Immeasurables
May all sentient beings enjoy happiness and the root of happiness.
May they be free from suffering and the root of suffering.
May they not be separated from the great happiness devoid of suffering. May they dwell in the great equanimity

Elemental Breaths and Qualities of the Elements
January 2013

Play Audio (23:40 )

Hazrat Inayat Khan teaches: All that exists lives on its own element, springs from its own element, and returns to its own element. So earth to earth, water to water, fire to fire, and air to air. Purification means to make a certain object itself; nothing added, nothing foreign attached to it which does not belong to it. These two rules make one understand the process by which the mind could be nourished and purified. The mind is nourished by thoughts and impressions that are harmonious and productive of beauty and which result in satisfaction.

The first thing in purifying the mind is to be able to discern the foreign element there. As all that is foreign to the body does not agree with the body, making it ill, so all that is foreign to the mind disturbs the peace of the mind, and it is that which proves that it does not belong to the mind: Such things as worry, anxiety, fear, sorrow, or any sort of disturbance that takes away the tranquility of the mind, preventing it from experiencing that jo
y and peace for which it longs and in which alone is its satisfaction.

Suggestion, Impression, Belief
Spring Retreat 2012 - Lake of the Ozarks, USA

Outline of Practices and Readings References

Session 1: The Power of Suggestion In the words of Hazrat Inayat Khan: From morning till evening we are impressed by suggestions coming to us automatically in different forms. The importance does not lie in receiving suggestions or in rejecting suggestions; it lies in understanding what will benefit us and what will be detrimental.
Play Audio of Session 1 (1:19:30)

Session 2: Assuring Success In the words of Hazrat Inayat Khan: When a man says, "I cannot," he has made a suggestion to himself, he has weakened his power of accomplishing what he could otherwise have accomplished. To admit to oneself, "I have no force, I have no power, I have no thought, I have no intelligence," only means working against oneself.
Play Audio of Session 2 (1:18:25)

Session 3: Ennobling the Soul In the words of Hazrat Inayat Khan: The Story of Ayaz is an example of modesty together with suggestion.
Play Audio of Session 3 (1:19:11)

Session 4: Hope, Effort, Belief Faith In the words of Hazrat Inayat Khan: We are able to do anything if we choose to make the effort. The difficulty is that often we do not choose to make an effort. Why not? Because we do not believe.
Play Audio of Session 4 (1:03:17)

Mystic Relaxation
Spring Retreat 2010 - Lake of the Ozarks, USA

Outline of Practices and Readings References

Day 1: Mystic Relaxation (1) In the words of Hazrat Inayat Khan: Mystic relaxation is of the greatest importance, for the whole spiritual culture is based and built upon this one subject; and yet there is so little spoken and written about it.
Play Audio of Part 1 (Length 51:55)
Play Audio of Part 2 (Length 56:07)

Day 2: Mystic Relaxation (1) continued In the words of Hazrat Inayat Khan: How does one relax the mind? The method for relaxation of the mind is first to make the mind tired. One who does not know the exercise for making the mind tired can never relax one's mind.
Play Audio of Part 1 (Length 58:36)
Play Audio of Part 2 (Length 51:06)

Day 3: Mystic Relaxation (2) In the words of Hazrat Inayat Khan: Mystic relaxation is really the same as meditation. Very often people are puzzled about the word meditation because it is used by so many people who sometimes have very different ideas about it. By calling it mystic relaxation the meaning becomes simple and cleas.
Play Audio of Part 1 (Length 46:14)
Play Audio of Part 2 (Length 56:25)

Day 4: Mystic Relaxation (2) continued In the words of Hazrat Inayat Khan: Concentration is the beginning of meditation; meditation is the end of concentration. Once concentration is fully acquired, it is easy for a person to meditate.
